To discuss her upcoming show and way of working, Yishay Garbasz and I skyped for hours. Since she is severely dyslexic I transformed this conversation into a sort of interview piece that was published on the Huffington Post. I hope to continue doing these exercises of “research portraits” with gender variant artists as a way to develop my method for the Vital Art project. Yishay has a show opening in New York City at
the Ronald Felman Gallery called “Severed Connections: Do what I say or they will kill you”, running May 9- June 13, 2015. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to get to know her big heart, and to learn about her artistic practice dedicated to chronicling different forms and spaces of trauma.
To whet your whistle for the interview: “My job is not to document a story, or see right or wrong — you must step out of the way and allow the picture to enter the camera,” explains British-Israeli and Berlin-based artist, Yishay Garbasz.
